AquaGIS Help
Overview
The AquaGIS system provides users with
map and report information concerning the Aquaculture Industry in
Newfoundland and Labrador. The website is divided into 3 main
sets of services:
1. Mapping Services - Links to Online Mapping
Services, spatial data information, map downloads, and other map
related information
2. Information
Services - Links to Aquaculture Site, license, and application
information, details and reports, including application and license
reviews, site and grower profiles and contact information, site and
license reports and the site analysis tool.
3. Submission Services - links to add or
submit information to the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture,
including news items, links of interest, and site comments or concerns.
User Access and Security Restriction
The various components and capabilites
within each service is dependent on the user access level to
which you are assigned. Public use does NOT require user
registration. Non-registered user are assigned a basic level of
access to site and grower information and the ability to view site
locations using the map browser. Registered users are assigned
higher access levels depending on the type of access required, and
the nature of the organization they represent. Each user will
only have services listed for which they have the required access.

Mapping Services
The mapping menu items allow the user to
jump to and view the various map services and map information
available in AquaGIS. The currently available map services
includes a Map Browser of layers displayed on NTS
basemaps, and other supporting services as outlined below. In the
near future, additional map services will become available,
including a mapping system with Hydrographic Data and associated
information.
Map Browser -This will take you to the map browser.
Ice Maps - This section allows you to view the current daily ice edge for the east coast of Canada. You can also select a
week ending date to view a Map of the 30 year median ice concentrations for that week
Weather Map - This section allows you to view current infrared, visible and radar images for eastern Canada. You can also view
current conditions and forecasts for various
communities in Newfoundland and Labrador. Selecting the links for
current weather conditions will link the user to an Environment Canada website.
Catalogue- The AquaGIS system contains data that is acquired from
various Departments and sources. This section describes the various
data sets, sources, and contacts. AquaGIS does not provide
information on, or acquisition services for the data it displays.
Those users who require additional information on any dataset should
contact the person(s) listed in the data catalogue.
Data Quality - This section
contains a data quality statement and a note on coastal resource
inventory data.
Downloads - Download maps and data
on aquaculture in Newfoundland and Labrador. You will need Adobe
Acrobat Reader to view some of the files.

Information Services
Search and Review Aquaculture Applications:
You can search for aquaculture applications using predefined searches or by entering specific information.
To use a predefined search click on the appropriate link in one of the three blue squares on the right hand side of the
screen. There are three types of predefined
searches:
- Quick Search: This allows you to view all applications that are either pending, approved or issued licenses.
- Licenses by Species: This allows you to view all licenses for a specific species.
- Pending Applications by Species: This
allows you to view all pending applications for a specific
species.
There are four ways to search for applications by entering specific information:
- View Application by File Number: This allows you to search for an application by entering an
application number.
- View Selected Applications: This allows you to search for applications by selecting a combination of information. You can
search for applications which are pending, approved or licensed, and/or applications that are new or renewal and/or
applications by species.
- Search Applications: This allows you to search for applications by entering information in one or more fields. You can
search by application id, site location, company/owner, contact person and/or license number.
- Search Applications by Dates: This allows you to search for applications registered between two dates.
Any results returned in your search will be displayed in a table. There are three fields you can click on that will provide you
with more information.
- App#: You can click on the app# to view more of the information on the application. The application/license history of
applicant will also be shown along with links to view the site profile and location. The application/license history
shows all the applications belonging to the applicant and allows you to view each one.
- Site Location: You can click on the site location to view detailed information about the site. There are also links
to the map and application/license history of the applicant. The application/license history shows all the
applications/licenses belonging to the site owner and allows you to view each one.
- Map: This will take you to the map browser
and show you the location of the site.
Note: Some of this information is only available to certain users.

Search and Review Aquaculture Sites
You can search for aquaculture sites by using predefined searches or by entering specific information.
To use the predefined searches click on a species type to view associated aquaculture sites.
To search for aquaculture sites by entering specific information fill in one or more of the fields. You can
search by site location, company/owner, contact person and/or license number.
Any results returned in your search will be displayed in a table. There are two fields you can click on that will provide you
with more information.
- Site Location: You can click on the site location to view detailed information about the site. There are also links
to the map and application/license history of the applicant. The application/license history shows all the
applications/licenses belonging to the site owner and allows you to view each one.
- Map: This will take you to the map browser
and show you the location of the site.
Note: Some of this information is only available to certain users.

Site Analysis
The Site Analysis requires the user to provide a site centroid location and site extents in length and width. The
site centroid location can be entered in one of three formats:
- Decimal Degrees: Enter the latitude and longitude of the site centroid location in decimal degrees.
- Degrees-Minutes-Seconds: Enter the latitude and longitude of the site centroid location in degrees-minutes-seconds.
- UTM Easting/Northing: Enter the easting,
northing and zone of the site centroid location.
Click the radio button beside the format you want to enter. For the site size enter the E-W extents and the N-S extents.
The Site Analysis routine will complete a series of spatial evaluations and queries and provide a text based
report on the proposed location. This report will provide valuable information in determining the viability
and potential conflicts in pursuing a site at this location.

Reports
To view a report you can either choose a precompiled report or create a custom report. These reports are available
in HTML and PDF formats. To view a report in PDF format you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer.
To view a precompiled report click on the HTML version or PDF version link beside report title.
To create a custom report there are four sections you have to complete.
- Information to Include: Check the information you wish to view in the report.
- Selection Criteria: Choose the items which will define how the information is selected. More than one option can
be chosen in each box by holding down the ctrl key while clicking on each value.
- Sorting and Grouping: Select an item to sort by and choose whether to display the information ascending or
descending. You can also choose if you want the information grouped with counts.
- Select either an HTML or PDF version
report.

This section lists aquaculture, aquaculture agencies and fisheries contact information.

Site Comment
To add a site comment, fill in the fields with the appropriate comment information and submit.

To add a news item, fill in the fields with the appropriate news item information and submit.

Add Link
To add a link, fill in the fields with the appropriate link information and submit.

Modify User
To modify your user information, make changes in appropriate fields and submit.

Change Password
To change your AquaGIS password, please specify your username and old password, then enter a new password and
confirm (retype) the password.

Logout
This will log you out of AquaGIS.

Conversion
Select the radio button next to the type of coordinates you want to convert. Enter coordinates in the corresponding
text boxes. There are three
types of coordinates you can enter:
- Decimal Degrees: Enter the latitude and longitude in Decimal Degrees
- Degrees-Minutes-Seconds: Enter the latitude and longitude in Degrees-Minutes-Seconds
- UTM-Universal Transverse Mercator: Enter
the Easting, Northing and Zone
The coordinates will be converted and displayed in Decimal Degrees, Degrees-Minutes-Seconds,
Degrees-Decimal Minutes, and UTM with the appropriate NTS Map Sheet Name. Click on View Map to see
the location in the map browser.

Location Map
To view a specified map location select the radio button next to the type of coordinates you want to enter. Enter
the sites coordinates in the corresponding text boxes. There are three types of coordinates you can enter:
- Decimal Degrees: Enter the latitude and longitude in Decimal Degrees
- Degrees-Minutes-Seconds: Enter the latitude and longitude in Degrees-Minutes-Seconds
- UTM-Universal Transverse Mercator: Enter
the Easting, Northing and Zone
Select the radio button next to the map scale you wish to view.
When you submit you will be taken to the map browser centered on the requested map at the requested scale.
